Calligraphy Class

Our popular modern calligraphy class is held regularly (usually once a month) at our studio in North Charleston, SC and is taught by INK MEETS PAPER co-owner and lettering artist Allison Nadeau.

This was honestly one of the best calligraphy classes I have ever taken. I was so excited to go home and practice (and I actually continued to practice every day!)

What Students Are Saying

Allison is a wonderful teacher! She makes the class fun and gives lots of encouragement. She is also very patient and eager to help or offer suggestions. I have already been practicing at home and feel so confident after taking the class!
Meaghan, calligraphy student

I left feeling SO INSPIRED and have been practicing 2-3 hours every day since taking the class!!!
Jill, calligraphy student

I was somewhat intimidated by the level of skill that modern calligraphy requires. However, Allison was quick to reassure me that it’s a skill anyone can learn. She was right! She broke the letters down into simple strokes that were easy to learn, and by the end of the class I found that I was really having fun with it! I’m now excited to practice and can’t wait to see what all I can create.

Classes are held at the INK MEETS PAPER Studio in North Charleston.

Can I still do calligraphy if my handwriting is terrible?

Absolutely! Along with learning new tools for putting ink on paper, you’ll also learn to form letters in a way that differs from regular writing (we like to think of it as drawing letters).

Can left-handed people take this class?

Yes! Just a make a note at checkout that you’re left handed, and we’ll be sure to seat you where you won’t be bumping elbows with the person next to you.

Are classes for adults only?

Our classes and workshops are geared toward adults, but we’ve had a few teenagers take our Beginner Modern Calligraphy class in the past. It’s 3 hours of focused work and writing. Working with pointed pen definitely requires patience and an ability to slow down and focus, so if you think a younger student would enjoy the class, that person is welcome to register.

I’m interested in taking a class, but can my friend/significant other/parent sit in on the class without purchasing a ticket?

Everyone attending class must purchase a ticket. We put a lot of hard work and effort into making the class an enjoyable learning environment and keep our class sizes small in order to maintain lots of one-on-one interaction in addition to class-wide instruction.

What do I need to bring to class?

Just yourself! All supplies and materials for class are included. You’re welcome to bring a drink or a snack though (including BYOB).

I’m unable to attend on the date I registered for. Can I reschedule for another class date?

For calligraphy classes, if you are no longer able to attend on your class date, please notify us at least 48 hours prior to your scheduled class date in order to receive credit for a future class (classes are nonrefundable). This credit must be redeemed within 6 weeks of your originally scheduled class date. Cancellations requests made with less than 48 hours notice are not accepted, and the registration will be nonrefundable and nontransferable to another class date.

For classes and workshops led by guest instructors, tickets are nonrefundable and nontransferable to other classes, as these are special one-time only events. Please ensure you’re able to attend on the date and time specified before purchasing a ticket.

I saw you had a class in Greenville, SC— any chance there will be another one?

In January 2015, we did a special calligraphy workshop in partnership with the talented Makers Collective team (who also do Indie Craft Parade). While another calligraphy class in Greenville (or any other city besides Charleston) is not currently on our schedule right now, we do regularly offer classes at our Charleston-based studio and consistently offer Saturday classes to make it easier for out-of-town students to attend class (and also enjoy a weekend in Charleston).

Do you offer one-on-one private classes?

We do not offer one-on-one classes at this time.

What about private group classes?

Please get in touch about our group rates for private events held at our studio.
