Homemade Boiled Custard

We’re putting our recipe cards to work this holiday season and sharing one of our favorite winter recipes. This homemade boiled custard was always a tradition during Christmastime in Jamie’s family, and we still make it each winter. It also makes a perfect gift at holiday parties when shared in a nice glass vessel or carafe (bonus points: bring a copy of the recipe to share).

INGREDIENTS
3 egg yolks
1/2 cup sugar
1 heaping teaspoon flour
1 tablespoon vanilla (or 1 whole vanilla bean)
pinch of salt
1 quart 2% milk

INSTRUCTIONS
Separate eggs. Add sugar, salt, flour, and vanilla to yolks. Heat milk over medium. Add small amount of milk to egg mixture, then pour mixture into milk. Cook, stirring continually, for 10 minutes until slightly thick (never let boil!). Strain. Serve chilled. Add a pinch of ground nutmeg as garnish. Makes four 8-ounce servings.

P.S. That beautiful indigo napkin was handcrafted in Charleston by our friends at Onawa Designs.
