Homemade Boiled Custard

We’re putting our recipe cards to work this holiday season and sharing one of our favorite winter recipes. This homemade boiled custard was always a tradition during Christmastime in Jamie’s family, and we still make it each winter. It also makes a perfect gift at holiday parties when shared in a nice glass vessel or carafe (bonus points: bring a copy of the recipe to share).

INGREDIENTS
3 egg yolks
1/2 cup sugar
1 heaping teaspoon flour
1 tablespoon vanilla (or 1 whole vanilla bean)
pinch of salt
1 quart 2% milk

INSTRUCTIONS
Separate eggs. Add sugar, salt, flour, and vanilla to yolks. Heat milk over medium. Add small amount of milk to egg mixture, then pour mixture into milk. Cook, stirring continually, for 10 minutes until slightly thick (never let boil!). Strain. Serve chilled. Add a pinch of ground nutmeg as garnish. Makes four 8-ounce servings.

P.S. That beautiful indigo napkin was handcrafted in Charleston by our friends at Onawa Designs.

Let’s Print!

I’m so excited to be teaching the winter series letterpress workshop at Redux Studios in downtown Charleston. Not only do they have amazing exhibitions and artist studios, but they emphasize the importance of art education and offer a variety of classes. Redux is particularly near and dear to me, as it’s where I took my first letterpress class almost five years ago.

The class meets once a week for three weeks. We’ll cover letterpress terms and vocabulary, learn how to mix ink, and print with wood and metal type using a sign press and table-top platen press. You don’t have to have any experience, and all materials will be provided. Class size is limited to six students.

When: Wednesdays, February 6, 13, and 20 / 6pm – 9pm
Cost: Member $140 / Non-Member $175

DIY Event Recap: Watercolor Envelope Liners

INK MEETS PAPER kicked off December 2012 with a DIY event hosted by SpaceCraft Studios as part of the first-ever Avondale Holiday Market. Participants picked out a set of our letterpress holiday cards and then painted envelope liners with watercolors. In the midst of the hustle and bustle of the holidays, it was nice to take a moment and create.

This particular project is nice because it works for all ages and skill levels (perfect for a drop-in crafting event). I love how creative everyone was with painting their liners. There were definitely some lucky recipients for those cards. To see the rest of the photos from the event, check out the INK MEETS PAPER Facebook page.

Workshop Recap: Handprinting on Fabric

I’m a bit behind in posting a recap of the handprinting workshop I led as part of the North Charleston Cultural Arts Department’s open studio series; however, better late than never, right?

The class was so much fun, and we used a variety of printing techniques– from handmade stamps to the freezer paper stencil method– to customize a set of cotton dish towels. See more workshop photos on our Facebook page and on the North Charleston’s Flickr album.

Want to make your holiday cards extra special this year? Pick up a set of our letterpress holiday cards and pull up a seat at the SpaceCraft Studios work table as we make watercolor envelope liners.

(Not to mention, this DIY event is happening at the same time as the Avondale Holiday MarketFest. Handmade holidays + local shopping = what more could you want?)
